Electrical Safety When Using Space Heaters & Holiday Lights
There’s nothing quite like cozying up next to a space heater or seeing your home lit up in festive lights during the holidays. But with wintertime cheer comes an increase in electrical hazards. In fact, December and January are peak months for electrical fires, many of which are preventable.
At Freedom Electric, we believe safety should never take a back seat to comfort or holiday spirit. Here’s how to enjoy warmth and wonder this winter—without putting your home at risk.
The Dangers of Winter Electrical Overload
Winter weather increases electrical demand in the home. Between space heaters, electric blankets, Christmas lights, and kitchen appliances, it’s easy to overload your circuits. Here’s what that can lead to:
- Tripped breakers or blown fuses.
- Overheated wiring, which can melt insulation and ignite.
- Extension cords catching fire, especially if undersized.
- Outlets sparking, buzzing, or blackening due to overload.
Space Heater Safety Tips
Space heaters are a quick way to warm up a chilly room, but they’re also a leading cause of winter home fires. Use these tips to keep things safe:
- Plug Directly Into a Wall Outlet
- Never use extension cords or power strips—they can overheat.
- Keep Clearance
- Maintain at least 3 feet of space around the heater. Keep it away from curtains, bedding, and furniture.
- Look for Safety Features
- Use models with automatic shutoff if tipped over or overheated.
- Avoid Running Overnight
- If you must, use a timer or smart plug to auto shutoff after a set time.
- Inspect Before Use
- Check cords for frays, damage, or discoloration. Replace damaged units.
Holiday Lighting: Bright but Safe
Holiday decorations are joyful, but they’re also a seasonal fire hazard if not handled properly.
- Use Indoor/Outdoor Rated Lights Correctly
- Only use outdoor-rated lights and cords outside. Indoor lights can’t withstand moisture or cold.
- Check for Damage
- Look for broken bulbs, frayed wires, or cracked plugs before hanging.
- Limit Connection Chains
- Only connect the number of strings recommended by the manufacturer—usually 3 to 5 sets per outlet.
- Use GFCI Outlets Outdoors
- These shut off power if there’s a short or moisture detected.
- Don’t Leave Lights On Unattended
- Turn off holiday lights before bed or when you leave the house.
Electrical Load Awareness
Your home’s circuits are designed to handle a limited amount of power. Adding too many devices—especially high-wattage ones like heaters or ovens—can overwhelm them.
- Don’t run heaters and holiday lights on the same circuit.
- Avoid using kitchen appliances and heaters on shared outlets.
- If breakers trip frequently, your panel may be undersized or outdated.
When to Call an Electrician
Reach out to a licensed electrician like Freedom Electric if you notice:
- Flickering lights or dimming when appliances turn on.
- Warm or discolored outlets.
- Burning smells from devices or panels.
- Breakers tripping repeatedly.
We can help upgrade your panel, add dedicated circuits for heaters or decorations, and ensure your system is ready for seasonal demand.
Stay Safe, Stay Warm, Stay Merry
Don’t let an electrical mishap ruin your holiday or winter season. A little caution goes a long way when it comes to high-demand devices like space heaters or elaborate lighting.
Freedom Electric is proud to keep Idaho families safe, warm, and bright all winter long. Whether you need an inspection, a panel upgrade, or emergency service, we’re just a call away.
